Dust off the Instruments

A Rare Beauty
My Gibson RD Custom

Nowadays when you Google "Gibson RD" it returns a picture of one of my guitars. This makes for lots of visitors who are searching for RD pics and information!

Gibson RD
This classic sat quietly in a closet for about 25 years. I bought it sight unseen and totally hit the jackpot. Included was a letter from 1978 that was handwritten in a Texas prison. It gives hints of the backstory.
Gibson RD
It's a giant slab of maple that weighs a ton. This is the heaviest guitar I've ever played. The finish is amazing! It's nothing but seamless sheer gloss over the entire instrument.
Gibson RD
Showroom condition, with the original hang-tags, strap & extra strings.
Gibson RD
The classic black headstock over a blond maple neck. The RD has a huge scale. It feels a bit like a bass because the frets are so far apart.
Gibson RD
These are the orginal active electronics by Moog, for studio recording. It's all hand-soldered circuits and wiring. When the active electronics are running, the RD puts out an clean & powerful signal.
Gibson RD The shape of the RD loosely resembles a Gibson Explorer.

I like musical gear, but especially guitars and amps. Back in the day I bought collectible guitars, lots of amps and a pile of recording gear. I own enough stuff to fill a small studio. It's crates and crates of musical madness.

For electric guitar, I like to run lots of amps at the same time in elaborate configurations. My favorite setup is to break out the amps into left, right and center channels through signal splitters and a studio effects deck. It makes for a wall of power. My favorite sounds are reminiscent of the Edge and Alex Lifeson.

I would leave my whole rig all set up on the mezzanine of the Certified Parts Warehouse and go up there after hours to raise the roof. Like, what else are you supposed to do on a cold winter night in NH? I wear earplugs so I can run everything loud enough to feel the sound coming up through my feet. It literally shakes the dust off the rafters sometimes. Definitely enough to give you goose bumps!

Just like some of the old-school guitar heroes, I believe the trick to getting great sound is more in the amps and technique than in the actual instrument. Not that I don't like kick-ass guitars or anything, I have something like a half-dozen vintage pieces in great condition. And others too. I love to play them all!

All of my gear is currently in deep storage. One day I'll get a big house where I can set everything up again. Some guys like to work on their cars or hang around in pool halls. Given the choice, I'd rather have an elaborate and comfortable home studio where I can relax and record into the wee hours.
